The marriage displeased  George's father who disinherited him. George died following the birth of their second child and Mary Ann went on the stage. What happened next must be seen through a veil of spin created, in part at least, by political opponents of her son. But it does appear that after the death of her first husband Mary Ann continued working on the stage and living in reduced circumstances, and further that, once widowed she proved herself a bad or unlucky chooser of men.

F. Stratford Canning Born Garvagh, Londonderry 1744. Died 22nd May 1787. Partner in the merchant banking firm of French, Boroughs & Co (in practice probably more merchant than banker). The marriage displeased  Stratford's father who disinherited him. Stratford nonetheless appears to have prospered in his mercantile career. There is a renowned portrait of "Mrs Canning and her daughter, Bess" by Romney at Fyvie Castle, Scotland. Giles Hunt believes the painting originally included also the eldest son, Henry Canning, but that poor Henry got painted out, possibly to improve the look of the portrait. Mehitabel inherited her unusual given name from her maternal grandmother, Mehetabel Paul/Steele, daughter of Sir Joshua Paul of Co Carlow. No consensus emerges on how the name Mehatable should be spelled, however.

(ii) Second daughter Päpke  Born ca. 1840.
(b) Elizabeth "Bess" Canning. Baptised 6th March 1777, Died 17th December 1838. Married, 14th December 1805, George Henry Barnett of Glympton Park, Woodstock. (born Glympton Park, Oxon 4th April 1780. Died 26th April 1871. Buried Glympton). They had issue.

This genealogy is not intended to be comprehensive.  Therefore the generation indicator mark (e.g.  (A), (i)  or whatever) does not necessarily indicate the chronological position of a child's birth date in relation to those of siblings.   (Previously omitted branches may nonetheless be added in response to expressions of interest.)

As far as possible, data have been obtained from, and corroborated to, more than one source: the starting point has been notes inherited from descendants of Bess Canning 1777 - 1838 who married George Henry Barnett 1780 - 1871.   For the Canning family, the compiler is indebted, in particular, to Giles Hunt, Lord Garvagh, Lisa Getting, Cleve Hassell, Kim Salisbury and Ray Steele, each of whom has supplied valuable information, inspiration or both.   The city archivist in Hamburg was also particularly helpful. Surviving errors are, of course, the compiler's own responsibility.

For readers interested in those Cannings who have left behind them the largest footprints, published sources on George Canning 1770 - 1827 include Wendy Hinde's biography entitled "George Canning"and published by Collins in 1973, which makes an excellent starting point.   For a more intimate appreciation of George Canning 1770 - 1827, of his nephew Stratford Canning 1786 - 1880 and of some of the less widely reported family members, the compiler commends "Mehitabel Canning  A Redoubtable Woman" edited by Giles Hunt (a kinsman). This is a compilation of correspondence from and to Mehitabel Patrick / Canning 1749 - 1831, illuminated by the editor's own abundantly thoughtful commentary and published 2001 by Rooster Books of Royston, Herts, England.
