"One of my Uncles..." (loose)
Reverse side of "One of my Uncles..."
Wherein George Canning says, effectively, that this uncle is an exact look-alike for Rafton Canning, his father, whom he has not seen after he (George) was 3 years old. Later, on his death record, George's father's name is given as
George Canning
, not Rafton Canning. The identity of the man in this photo is of pivotal importance to unravelling our Canning genealogy. If anyone has any knowledge of any detail in this photo (the tie? the chair? the decade? the country?), please,
please
contact us.
Angel of Norfolk Crest, origin unknown. (loose)
Whether it relates to our Angels or not is totally uncertain at this point (June, 2006).
Reverse side \/, which Angel Crest was painted on (church hymn?)
Nellie Angel Butler Hailstone
Reverse side \/
Young Woman with Striped Dress,
possibly Annie Angel-Butler, George's wife
Reverse side \/
Mary Ann Angel, mother of Annie Canning nee Angel,
and wife of John Butler of Ireland, if we've got this straight!
Camille Perrot, wife of Gustave Perrot who was
son of Louise Perrot nee Canning
Reverse side \/
Amy Davidson, daughter of Mary Ann Davidson, nee O'Connor, widow of Rafton Canning, and Lieut.-Col. Retired Eugene Hilary Davidson of the British Army in Bengal, India
Reverse side blank
Mrs. George Canning, i.e., Annie Angel-Butler Canning
Compare to Young Woman with Striped Dress (above)
This portrait would have been taken or reprinted by her brother-in-law, Arthur (Rafton-)Canning, prominent Canadian photographer
Reverse side blank
Gustave and Camille Pierrot / Perrot
G and C came to the U.S. several times. Gustave (short for Augustus, we think) had a short-hand school for a short while. He was the son of Louise Canning Perrot, who was the only sister of Rafton, Baltriune, Marinus (MFA) et.al. It was most likely he who signed "A. Perrot" on the marriage record of Rafton and Mary Ann Canning in Paris, 1861.
Reverse side same as Camille, above
Mary Hoban
We don't have any other references for her, as yet. If found, will post.
Babe with Lace
No info on this lovely one. Was next to Alicia May Robinson in the album, so seems to be another picture of Alicia May. Reverse side blank.
Alicia May Robinson
Note reverse, saying she is 10 months old in this picture, taken 1892.
Reverse side \/
Grandmother O'Connor, Rathkeale, Ireland
Mother of Mary Ann O'Connor Canning. It was she, presumably in London, to whom the babes Achilles, George and Arthur were taken. See George's memoirs in the French Cannings website.
Reverse side \/
Bo (seated) and Tony.
This is Achilles Botrine "Bo" Canning, nephew of the Achilles Botriune Canning born Paris 1862. Standing is either Eugene, who was just one year younger than Bo, or Anthony Basil Canning, younger than Bo by two and a half years. Notice the reverse side, "Not to be taken from home. Sitting June, 1895."

Photographer: Theodore Endear, Cleveland, Ohio
Denis O'Connor
Brother, or possibly father, of Mary Ann, John and Charles O'Connor of Rathkeale, Co. Limerick, Ireland
Reverse side \/ Photographer Augustus Scott, Oxford Street, London)
Alfred Canning, born 1891, North Bay, Canada
Alfred was the first son of Achilles Botriune Canning, brother of George of Cleveland. Both George and Achilles had several sons and daughters, both having a daughter as firstborn child, followed by a son. Naming his firstborn son Alfred may point to their grandfather, Alfred Canning, civil engineer. But this grandfather was known as George Richard Canning to Gustave in France. (??) Photographer: Y. A. Simpson
Achilles Botriune Canning, born Paris 1862, son of Rafton Canning and Mary Ann O'Connor Canning. Known as "Uncle Achille" to George's children in Cleveland.
Denis O'Connor and Family
Denis was Mary Ann O'Connor Canning's brother, though we don't hear much about him. We have letters from John and Charles O'Connor, who played significant roles in the family during the Paris years.
Nellie Butler Angel
We have several photos of Nellie, but absolutely no biographical information on her. Notice the feathers in this and the following portrait. Annie Canning nee Angel Butler and her brother, perhaps the larger family, had an extensive business dying silks and feathers. The early Los Angeles city directories show what surely must have been members of the family there, in associated businesses.

Amy Davidson Cole
Certainly her name was Amy Davidson in this picture, but we're using the names exactly as George had them in the album. Amy married Charlie Cole of Florida; apparently he was something to talk about, if the between-the-lines innuendoes are what they seem to be. See photo above for biography. Amy was George's half sister.
Photography: J. Dixon, Yonge Street, Toronto
Mrs. Mary Ann Angel Butler
This would be George's mother-in-law, Annie Angel-Butler Canning's mother. Annie was born in Guernsey, British Isles, so Mary Ann may have been from there.
